Ever met LGBTQA+ gamers online?

Postby knout » Fri Aug 28, 2015 12:07 pm

I've been gaming online for a long time but it seemed like everyone was straight, granted you don't discuss it right away but when you get to know people it still seemed the same.
Have you encountered other gamers who identify differently? Better yet, did you ever meet an Ace gamer by accident?

I think about 12 years ago there was one gamer in a community I was who was out as gay and very vocal about it, I think it was the only one I heard of. Then last year I made a friend in game and it turned out he's bi and as we talked he was supportive and curious about asexuality.

Come to think of it, I know a progamer who is trans!

But overall, it often feels like the online gaming world is just as heteronormative/straight as the real world (and even more male-driven), hence my question, have you met others? Have you been open about asexuality yourself in games?

I thought this would make interesting conversation (and I hope this is the right forum to do so :))

Not by accident, no. Mostly through meets; sometimes on here. I pretty much stick to gaming with aces and ace-friendly folk when I want to game online - as short as the list, so far.

Considering the amount of racism, sexism, homophobia and such still plaguing online games, I imagine many tend to "keep it in the closet". I haven't come across any aces though, just a few homosexuals and bisexuals.

I remember quite a few being from Perfect World International. Come to think of it, it had quite a good gaming community for a F2P MMORPG.

No, I haven't. I've heard that some members of the LGBT don't like asexuals, so even if I met someone, I am not sure if I would reveal to them my asexuality.

The only asexuals I've met are from AVEN and AGN, so no, I've never met any ace via gaming.

There's a lot who keep it in the closet for multiple reasons. I have met a few who were out in guilds i've been in and things, but its been in more recent years.

When I was playing Rift I found out that there were other ace members in the guild I was in. It came up in the guild chat during a discussion about LGBT issues. That's the only thing I've encountered.
Games are a waste of time, but they're a fun waste of time.

Ironically yes, quite a few, one of my long term gaming mates of ten years turned out to be Gay! *shrug*, one CS:GO group had a bit of a joke about the only straight person on their teamspeak :D

They exist, just a case of finding them.

The only ones I know of that I've met are ace. And that's through here, haha.

I do play on a minecraft server with someone who I think is LGBTQA+, but I haven't asked him. Cause that doesn't seem like something I should just ask him out of the blue.
He is the only person I'm somewhat close to who knows I'm ace.

I have a weird story of meeting another Ace gamer by complete accident. A few years ago, when I was making Minecraft gaming videos actually, I was invited to join a gaming group called Bottle Rocket Gaming and be apart of their modded Minecraft server. Met a number of members, including one that had been around for as long as the group has existed. I didn't learn until two years later that they were asexual as they had just joined Acebook (they used the same handle) it was such a weird revelation to me and a surprise at finding another asexual in the wild so to speak as I didn't find them on sites that specifically catered to asexuals in some way.
